Best Gumroad Alternatives for Selling Digital Products (2026)

A lower selling fee is useful. So is getting your product finished, giving buyers reliable access and knowing what happens after the sale. Compare five alternatives by the work you need them to do.

By Genesize

Published by Genesize, one of the platforms compared. Pricing and documented capabilities checked on October 10, 2026 using official sources and our current implementation. These are use-case recommendations, not a scored hands-on ranking of every platform. Prices are in USD and may change.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The best Gumroad alternative depends on what you still need to build. Consider Genesize for AI product creation and the sales workflow, Payhip for a low fixed-cost start, Podia for hosted courses and community, Sellfy for downloads alongside merchandise, and Lemon Squeezy for merchant-of-record checkout. Gumroad can remain a sensible choice when you want no monthly subscription and its tax-handling service. Compare the full cost before switching.

01 / YOUR SHORTLIST

Five Gumroad alternatives at a glance

Start with the product format: a PDF, a written course, a video school and a software license need different tools. Then check creation, the offer page, payments, delivery and follow-up.

Additional transaction, payout and marketing fees can apply. Product eligibility and store approval matter.

Podia’s figure above is explicitly annual billing, not a monthly contract. Sellfy’s annual equivalent is also paid upfront. The transaction percentages shown do not all cover the same services; read the processing and tax distinctions below.

02 / THE BASELINE

What does Gumroad actually cost?

Gumroad has no monthly subscription. Its published direct-sale platform fee is 10% plus $0.50 per transaction. The help center lists card processing separately at 2.9% plus $0.30; PayPal charges are also separate. Discover marketplace sales have a 30% fee with processing included. Sources: Gumroad pricing and Gumroad’s fee breakdown.

On an illustrative $20 direct card purchase, the platform fee is $2.50 and that listed card fee is $0.88: $3.38 combined before tax or other applicable charges. That is different from comparing only the headline percentage.

Larger sellers should also check Gumroad’s volume discount: its documentation says that, after paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales that month use a 5% plus $0.50 platform fee. Processing remains separate. The examples below stay below that threshold.

Gumroad also acts as merchant of record for sales-tax collection and remittance on its transactions. That service has value. Switching to a direct payment setup means checking who will handle those responsibilities, rather than assuming every storefront provides the same tax service.

03 / CREATE AND SELL

Genesize: for building the product and its sales workflow

Genesize is a strong fit when your product is still an idea, outline or collection of expertise. Use AI to draft an ebook, written course or practical resource, edit it, prepare a cover and export supported files such as PDF and DOCX. Your product connects to a storefront and an editable AI sales funnel with checkout and delivery.

A consultant, for example, could create a client onboarding toolkit, replace generic examples with their own process and build a sales page around the result. This is an illustrative workflow, not a claimed customer outcome. Our ebook creation guide shows the steps from idea to offer.

Starter costs $34 per month on monthly billing, with 1000 monthly AI credits and 3 saved product projects. It includes storefronts, funnels, buyer records and sales analytics. Creator starts at $58 per month and adds CRM, email follow-ups and Growth Agent assistance. Customer marketing sends require an eligible paid subscription; trial users can prepare drafts. You review campaigns before activating them.

Genesize takes no platform percentage of Store sales. Stripe processing still applies, and you must complete Stripe connection requirements before accepting payments. Genesize is not a merchant-of-record tax service. Review your selling obligations separately. See current plans and allowances.

Buyers can access purchased written courses through an online reader with saved manual lesson progress, alongside downloadable files. Video hosting, graded quizzes and certificates are not included. Communities and paid memberships are coming soon in a future release; they are not publicly available selling features today.

04 / LOW FIXED COST

Payhip: for starting with a finished product

Payhip’s Free plan has no monthly charge and a 5% platform fee. Plus is $29 per month with 2%; Pro is $99 per month with no platform transaction fee. All three advertise the same features and unlimited products and revenue. Payment-processing fees remain additional. Source: Payhip pricing.

Its documented tools cover downloads, online courses, coaching and memberships, making it useful when you already have something to sell. It also offers customer email updates and integrations with email services. Check the follow-up workflow you need rather than assuming “email included” means a complete automation suite. Sources: Payhip features and email tools.

The practical tradeoff is fixed cost versus selling volume. Starting free can make sense while validating an offer; compare its paid plans once percentage fees exceed the subscription you would pay to reduce them.

05 / HOSTED LEARNING

Podia: for courses, a website and community

Podia combines hosted courses, downloads, a website, community spaces and email. Its current annual pricing lists Mover at $504 per year with a 5% platform fee and 100 included email subscribers. Shaker is $1,008 per year with no platform fee and 500 included subscribers. These are upfront annual commitments; processing is additional. Source: Podia pricing.

Consider it when the hosted learning and community experience matters more than generating a downloadable manuscript. Check product, video and email allowances as the business grows. Our Genesize vs Podia comparison explores the difference between creating the resource and choosing where to host it.

06 / MIXED CATALOG

Sellfy: for digital downloads alongside merchandise

Sellfy combines downloadable products, subscriptions, physical goods and print-on-demand in a storefront. Starter is $29 per month, or $22 per month equivalent with annual billing, and has a $10,000 annual sales limit. It advertises no platform transaction fee, while Stripe or PayPal processing remains separate. Sources: Sellfy pricing and its official pricing comparison.

This suits a creator selling files and merchandise together. Compare annual revenue caps before scaling: exceeding your plan requires an upgrade and can trigger overage charges. Built-in email is listed across plans, while upselling, abandoned-cart tools and seller affiliate features require higher tiers.

07 / MERCHANT OF RECORD

Lemon Squeezy: for digital checkout and tax handling

Lemon Squeezy has no monthly ecommerce charge and a base fee of 5% plus $0.50 per sale. Its merchant-of-record model includes payment processing and sales-tax handling, so do not automatically add a separate standard Stripe charge to that base fee. It also documents downloads, subscriptions and software license keys. Source: Lemon Squeezy pricing.

Additional fees can change the result: its documentation lists international transactions, PayPal, subscription payments, certain marketing features and some payouts. Fees are calculated on the total order value, which can include tax. Read the detailed fee schedule.

Consider it for eligible downloads or software when the payment and tax service is central to your choice. Check store approval, supported countries, product eligibility and payout terms before planning a launch. You still need a process for creating and promoting the product.

08 / DO THE MATH

What do the platform charges look like at $200 and $2,000 in sales?

Imagine a $20 ebook sold through your own links. Ten purchases produce $200 in gross sales; 100 produce $2,000. Here are the published platform charges plus monthly subscriptions for a narrow comparison of Gumroad, Payhip and Genesize.

Calculated examples: platform charges only, not take-home income
Option10 × $20 purchases100 × $20 purchases
Gumroad direct sales$25$250
Payhip Free$10$100
Payhip Plus$33$69
Payhip Pro$99$99
Genesize Starter$34$34

Excludes payment processing, sales taxes, refunds, disputes, currency conversion, payout charges and extra capacity. Uses monthly billing, Gumroad’s standard direct-sale fee and the same order count and price in each column. These are arithmetic examples, not sales forecasts or evidence of equal features. Sources: Gumroad fees, Payhip pricing and Genesize plans.

At ten sales, a monthly subscription can cost more than a percentage-based option. At 100, the fee balance changes—but features and tax-handling responsibilities still differ. Evaluate the full service, not just the smallest number in a column.

Within Payhip’s published model, Plus becomes cheaper than Free above roughly $967 in monthly sales: $29 ÷ (5% − 2%). Pro becomes cheaper than Plus above $3,500: ($99 − $29) ÷ 2%. These thresholds isolate its plan fees and assume other charges stay the same.

09 / MAKE THE DECISION

When to switch from Gumroad—and when to stay

Stay when the lack of a monthly subscription, merchant-of-record service or your established buying experience is worth the fees. An alternative is more compelling when it solves a specific problem: unfinished products, costly platform fees, a missing learning experience or a storefront that needs different tools.

  1. Choose one test product. Include its real files, price and promised outcome.
  2. Check the offer on a phone. Read the description, preview, price and checkout transition as a new buyer.
  3. Verify delivery and recovery. Know how a buyer retrieves access if the receipt is lost, and what course progress is supported.
  4. List the complete monthly cost. Include billing interval, processing, email capacity, AI allowances and tax handling.
  5. Protect existing customers. Keep backups and purchased access intact. Confirm migration support before moving subscriptions or customer data.

A storefront alone does not generate demand. Plan how you will reach the buyer, through your own content, partnerships or other suitable channels. Our guide to selling without an audience offers practical starting points.

10 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Gumroad alternatives: frequently asked questions

What is the best Gumroad alternative for selling digital products?

Choose by your workflow. Genesize suits creating products with AI and connecting sales pages, checkout and delivery. Payhip suits a low fixed-cost start with finished products. Podia suits hosted courses and community, Sellfy suits downloads alongside merchandise, and Lemon Squeezy suits merchant-of-record checkout for eligible digital products and software.

Is there a free alternative to Gumroad?

Payhip has a permanent free plan with a 5% platform transaction fee, plus payment-processing fees. Lemon Squeezy has no monthly ecommerce fee but charges per sale. Free to join is different from free to sell. Genesize offers an eligible new-subscriber trial rather than a permanent free selling plan.

Which alternatives have no platform transaction fees?

Genesize does not take a platform percentage of Store sales. Payhip Pro and Sellfy advertise zero platform transaction fees, and Podia removes its platform fee on higher plans. Subscription costs and payment-processing fees still apply; zero platform commission does not mean zero selling cost.

Does Genesize create the product as well as help sell it?

Yes. Genesize helps draft and edit ebooks, written courses and practical digital resources, prepare covers and exports, and build an editable sales funnel connected to the product. Published offers connect to Stripe checkout and private buyer access. You still review the content, connect an eligible Stripe account and bring suitable visitors to the offer.

Can I move existing Gumroad subscriptions to another platform?

Do not assume recurring billing or customer access transfers automatically. Ask both platforms what they support, export your records, protect existing purchases and plan any customer reauthorization. An email-list export or copied product file does not migrate an active payment agreement.
