FROM AN IDEA TO A PRODUCT PEOPLE CAN BUY

Genesize vs Gumroad: Which fits your digital product business?

Both can help you sell a digital product. The bigger question is what you need before the sale: help building the product, a place to sell finished files, or someone to handle the sales-tax side of checkout.

Published by Genesize, one of the platforms compared. We checked current Genesize rules and Gumroad’s linked official sources on October 23, 2026. This is a documented comparison, not a claim that we ran a live selling test on both platforms.

CONSIDER GENESIZE IF

You need help creating the product and its selling workflow.

Turn your expertise into editable content, prepare exports and connect a storefront and sales funnel. Choose an eligible paid plan if you also need customer follow-up.

CONSIDER GUMROAD IF

You have a product ready and want no monthly platform bill.

Sell your files through Gumroad checkout and consider the value of its merchant-of-record service. Per-sale charges still apply, even though there is no monthly platform subscription.

02 / BEFORE YOU HAVE A FILE TO SELL

Create the product, then prepare the offer

Genesize starts with your expertise, audience and intended result. You can build an ebook, written course or practical resource, review the draft, change its design and export the finished material. AI can help with the writing; you still need to check the facts and add useful examples.

Starter includes 1,000 monthly AI credits and 3 saved projects. Manual editing, design changes and exports use no AI credits. A saved-project limit is workspace capacity, not a promise of that many finished products each month.

Gumroad also supports AI-assisted store work. Its MCP documentation describes connecting a compatible assistant to check sales and draft product listings. It says to add the product files in Gumroad before publishing. That is a different workflow from Genesize’s built-in content creation and editing.

A simple example

If your notes need to become a client-onboarding guide, Genesize can help structure and draft that product. If your finished PDF is already reviewed and ready to deliver, Gumroad may cover the selling job without adding a monthly platform bill. Start with what is missing from your process.

For a real look at our written-course editor and an original sample export, see the practical course example. For a full creation workflow, read how to create and sell an ebook with AI.

03 / FROM PRODUCT TO BUYER

Compare the store, delivery and follow-up

Genesize connects a product to its storefront, editable sales funnel, Stripe checkout and supported buyer delivery. Written-course buyers can read lessons online and record manual completion. It does not currently host video courses, grade quizzes or offer customer memberships; those requirements need separate evaluation.

The paid Creator plan costs $58 per month on monthly billing and adds CRM, email campaigns, automations and Growth Agent guidance. Contact and sending limits apply. Trial accounts can prepare drafts and previews; live customer campaigns need the first payment on a plan with email.

Gumroad’s feature page covers storefronts, memberships, email broadcasts, automated workflows and sales analytics. It is more than a checkout button. Compare the specific buyer experience and follow-up you need instead of assuming those tools are unique to Genesize.

A marketplace listing is also different from a marketing plan. Gumroad Discover offers another route to buyers, but placement and sales are not guaranteed. Plan how suitable people will find the offer on either platform.

04 / A CLEAR COST COMPARISON

Compare fixed costs and per-sale charges

Genesize Starter is $34 per month on monthly billing, or $285.60 paid upfront for a year. Genesize takes no platform percentage of Store sales. Stripe processing and any applicable tax-related costs are separate.

Gumroad advertises 10% plus $0.50 for direct sales and 30% for Discover sales. Its fee guide lists card processing separately for direct sales at 2.9% plus $0.30, while Discover’s 30% includes processing. PayPal and higher-volume terms can differ.

Example: a $20 download sold through direct links

This table compares the Genesize Starter subscription with Gumroad’s standard direct-sale platform charge. It excludes processing, taxes, refunds, extra AI usage and other services. It is not a take-home profit or a like-for-like service comparison.

Monthly platform-charge illustration; USD; processing and tax excluded
Direct sales / revenueGenesize StarterGumroad platform charge
0 sales / $0$34$0
5 sales / $100$34$12.50
25 sales / $500$34$62.50
100 sales / $2,000$34$250

At this price, 14 direct sales produce a $35 Gumroad platform charge, compared with the $34 Genesize subscription. That is only a platform-charge crossover. Add your actual processing costs and consider Gumroad’s tax-handling service before treating it as a saving.

At zero sales, Gumroad has no platform bill, while the Genesize subscription still costs money. That can matter more than a lower per-sale charge when you are testing an unproven idea.

Rates checked against Gumroad pricing and its fee documentation, plus current Genesize plans. The arithmetic is an original illustration, not customer revenue data.

05 / AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE

Payment processing and tax handling are different jobs

Gumroad resells your product and handles collection and payment of relevant sales taxes under its terms. That is what its merchant-of-record model means here. Weigh that service alongside its fees. It does not remove every responsibility of running your business.

Genesize connects your Stripe account for Store checkout. Our terms leave responsibility for your products, customer policies, taxes and fulfillment with you. A Stripe connection does not, by itself, make Genesize your merchant of record. If tax handling is a deciding factor, check your situation before moving an existing business.

06 / CHOOSE FOR YOUR CURRENT STAGE

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Genesize when creating is the bottleneck. You have expertise to package and want the product, sales page and selling workflow connected.
  • Consider Gumroad when the product is ready. You want to test finished files without committing to a monthly platform subscription.
  • Compare Genesize’s paid Creator plan when follow-up matters. Check its CRM and email allowances against the campaigns you intend to run.
  • Give Gumroad’s tax model real weight. A platform percentage may pay for work that you would otherwise need to manage separately.

You can also separate creation from selling. Genesize exports can be part of a workflow that uses another checkout, provided the file format and delivery are supported. You do not need to move a working store simply because you want help making a new product.

07 / A PRACTICAL SWITCHING CHECKLIST

Before changing your store

Test one product before moving a whole catalog. This is a suggested review process; we have not claimed to perform a customer migration.

  1. Check the product format. Review the actual files and what the buyer can open, read or download on the new platform.
  2. Map existing promises. List purchase access, updates, memberships and support that current buyers are owed. They do not transfer just because you change a sales link.
  3. Review customer permissions. Exporting a contact does not automatically give permission to send marketing from a different service.
  4. Test the offer and delivery. Use a supported preview or test mode. Check the price, receipt, access link and mobile experience.
  5. Change links after review. Preserve a way for existing buyers to get what they paid for and check recurring subscriptions separately.

08 / YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is Genesize a Gumroad alternative?

Yes, for creators who want to create and sell digital products. Genesize combines guided AI creation with storefronts and sales funnels. Gumroad can be a better fit when you already have the files, want no monthly platform subscription and value its merchant-of-record service.

Is Genesize cheaper than Gumroad?

It depends on sales, product prices and the services you need. Genesize Starter costs $34 per month on monthly billing, plus Stripe processing. Gumroad has per-sale charges rather than a monthly platform bill. Compare payment fees, taxes and the value of tax handling before deciding.

Does Gumroad have AI features?

Yes. Gumroad’s MCP connection lets a compatible AI assistant work with store information and draft product listings. Its documentation says product files are added in Gumroad before publishing. Genesize provides its guided product-content creation and editing workflow inside the application.

Does Genesize handle sales tax like Gumroad?

These are different arrangements. Gumroad acts as merchant of record for relevant indirect taxes under its terms. Genesize uses connected Stripe checkout and its terms leave responsibility for your product sales and taxes with you. Do not treat payment processing alone as a merchant-of-record service.

Can I move from Gumroad to Genesize?

You can prepare a new offer and storefront, but do not assume automatic migration. Check supported file delivery, customer permissions, existing purchase access and any recurring subscriptions separately. Test the new buyer journey before changing live links or closing an old store.

Is Genesize free to use?

Genesize offers eligible new subscribers a 14-day trial with 400 total AI credits and up to 3 saved projects. A payment method is required. The selected subscription renews unless canceled. It is a trial, not a permanent free plan; live customer email campaigns require a paid plan that includes email.
